Code 17 means that the engine temperature was still below 174 degrees after 8 minutes of operation. This could occur when the outside air temperature is very low, or if the thermostat is sticking open. A 180° thermostat, installed by many to reduce engine ping, can set this code if the is driven without a load in cool weather. Sometimes, a different sensor will have a resistance on the lower side of the acceptable resistance range, preventing a fault code with a 180° thermostat.
If the engine cooling system is functioning properly, the coolant temperature sensor may be out of range. As the temperature of the sensor increases, the resistance of the sensor should decrease. Typical vales for the sensor resistance are:
