Symptom/Condition:

Vehicles equipped with the 5.9L diesel engine and automatic transmission may exhibit a high throttle pedal effort. If this condition exists, perform the following repair.

Repair Procedure:

This procedure involves the installation of new throttle control components

. NOTE: IF THE VEHICLE IS TO BE EQUIPPED WITH A MOPAR AFTERMARKET SPEED CONTROL KIT, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO INSTALL THIS THROTTLE CONTROL BRACKET KIT. THE COMPONENTS IN THE BRACKET KIT ARE INCLUDED IN THE MOPAR SPEED CONTROL PACKAGE. REFER TO THE MOPAR ACCESSORY APPLICATION GUIDE AND PRICE LIST FOR INFORMATION REGARDING SPEED CONTROL FOR 1989 AND 1990 VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

1. Remove the transmission throttle valve cable and throttle valve lever at the transmission.

2. Install the new transmission throttle valve lever and attach the new transmission throttle valve cable to the lever.

3. Remove and discard any return springs and the original throttle control bracket.

REFER TO FIGURE 1 FOR COMPONENTS CALLED OUT IN THE FOLLOWING STEPS.

4. Install new throttle control bracket on the engine.

5. Install new return spring bracket on engine timing gear cover.

6. Attach new return spring between timing gear cover bracket and injector pump lever.

7. Install throttle cable on the throttle control bracket.

8. Install transmission throttle valve cable on the throttle control bracket.

9. Install throttle valve return spring between injector pump lever ball stud and transmission throttle valve cable.

10. Adjust the transmission throttle valve cable. Refer to "Adjustment Procedure" on page 21-4 of the 1990 Rear Wheel Drive Truck Diesel Supplement (Publication #81-370-0108A).
