Discussion:
For the 1992 model year, Huntsville radios, sales codes RAL, RAS, and RAN, will incorporate a short circuit detection feature. This new diagnostic feature will aid in identifying and locating a short circuit in the vehicles speaker wiring. This feature is included in all 1992 RAL and RAS radios. On vehicles equipped with RAN radios, this feature is included if the vehicle is built after MDH 11-18-XX.
RAL and RAS radios have knobs to tune the radio and adjust volume. RAN radios, both infinity and non-infinity, have toggle switches to tune the radio and adjust volume, and a joystick for adjusting balance and fade.
Diagnosis of RAL and RAS Radios:
1. Turn the radio on and set the volume to a comfortable listening level.
2. If the radio display does not operate, refer to the appropriate service manual for audio system diagnosis. If the radio display does operate, continue with this procedure.
3. Turn the balance and fade controls to their middle positions. If no sound is heard, there may be a speaker wiring short.
4. Move the balance and fade controls to the left front, right front, left rear, and right rear. If sound Is heard from any speaker while the balance and fade controls are in these positions there is a short in one of the speaker feed wires.
Inspect the wires from the black radio connector pins 5 and 6 for a short to ground.
Inspect the wires from the black radio connector pins 3 and 4 for a short to ground.
5. If no sound is heard at any point in the above adjustment to the balance and fade controls a short may still be present. Inspect the wires from the gray radio connector pins 5 and 6 and from the black radio connector pins 1 and 2 for a short to ground.
6. If the above test shows no problem, replace the radio.
Diagnosis of RAN Radios:
1. Turn the radio on and set the volume to a comfortable listening level.
2. If the radio display does not operate, refer to the appropriate service manual for audio system diagnosis. If the radio display does operate, continue with this procedure.
3. Move the joystick to the middle position. If no sound or low sound is heard from any speaker, there may be a speaker wiring short.
4. If the front speakers have normal sound, and there is no or low sound in the rear speakers, the wiring to one of the rear speaker has a short.
5. If the rear speakers have normal sound, and one of the front speakers has normal sound, the other front speaker wiring has a short.
