NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L MPI (MULTI-POINT FUEL INJECTED) ENGINES.
Discussion:
When installing the rocker arm assembly(s) on MPI engines, the following procedure must be followed to avoid damage caused by valve to piston contact. This procedure involves having the crankshaft at a specific location during the installation of the rocker arms and waiting a prescribed amount of time to allow the tappets to bleed down prior to rotating or cranking the engine.
Repair Procedure:
This procedure involves ensuring the crankshaft is in the proper location prior to installation of the rocker arm assembly(s).
1. Remove the rocker arm assembly(s) as outlined in the appropriate service manual.
2. Ensure crankshaft in is the proper location as outlined below;
PROPER CRANKSHAFT LOCATION:
3.9L ENGINE EQUIPPED
Locate the "V6" mark on the outer diameter of the vibration dampener (located 147° ATDC from the #1 firing mark).
Rotate the engine until the "V6' mark lines up with the TDC mark on the chain case cover.
5.2L ENGINE EQUIPPED
Locate the "V8" mark on the outer diameter of the vibration dampener (located 17.5° ATDC from the #1 firing mark).
Rotate the engine until the "V8" mark lines up with the TDC mark on the chain case cover.
5.9L ENGINE EQUIPPED
Locate the "17.5° ATC" mark on the outer diameter of the vibration dampener.
Rotate the engine until the "17.5°" ATC mark lines up with the TDC mark on the chain case cover.
3. Install rocker arm assembly(s) as outlined in appropriate service manual.
CAUTION: DO NOT ROTATE OR CRANK THE ENGINE DURING OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER ROCKER ARM INSTALLATION. ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC ROLLER TAPPETS ADEQUATE TIME TO BLEED DOWN, (ABOUT 5 MINUTES).
