Clunk or Rattle Felt in Steering Wheel/Column Over Rough Surfaces

Models: 1994 - 1995 (BR) Ram Truck

NOTE:    THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 1995 (MDH 01-01-XX).

Symptoms:

Rattle or clunk felt in steering column while driving on bumpy or rough road surfaces, or while making a turn.  

Diagnosis:

Perform inspection of front suspension and steering components, including a check of all fasteners for proper torque as specified in the appropriate service manual. Test drive the vehicle on a rough or bumpy road. With both hands on the steering wheel, feel for a clunk or listen for a rattling type noise. If felt or heard, follow the repair procedure.

NOTE:    THE REPAIR PROCEDURE WILL NOT RESOLVE CONCERNS ON VEHICLES BUILT AFTER JANUARY 1, 1995 (MDH 01-01-XX). FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSIS REFER TO GROUP 19 OF THE APPROPRIATE RAM TRUCK SERVICE MANUAL.

Repair:

This bulletin involves the replacement of the steering column and intermediate shaft on 1994 models and the replacement of only the column on 1995 models.

1.    Follow the Steering Wheel/Air Bag Removal & Installation Procedures as specified in Group 19, beginning on Page 19-34 of the 1994 Ram Truck Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370- 4108) or Page 19-35 of the 1995 Ram Truck Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-5108) as applicable.

2.    A new pinch bolt (P/N 6503210) should be installed whenever the intermediate shaft is disconnected from the steering column or the steering gear.

3.    Follow the Steering Column and Intermediate Shaft Removal & Installation Procedures beginning on Page 19-36 of the 1994 Ram Truck Service Manual, or Page 19-37 of the 1995 Ram Truck Service Manual as applicable.
