Models: 1994 - 1996 (BR) Ram Truck

NOTE:    THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE CUMMINS 5.9L DIESEL ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

1996 2500 CLUB CAB, 155" WB AND 4X4, EQUIPPED WITH THE HEAVY DUTY TRANSFER CASE, (SALES CODE DHG), BUILT AFTER MAY 9,1996 (MDH 05-09-XX) ALREADY HAVE THE REVISED PROPELLER SHAFTS AND DO NOT APPLY TO THIS BULLETIN.

Symptoms:

Customers may complain of a droning type noise (sometimes described as a booming noise) and/or a vibration felt in the seat track, floor pan, and steering column. This condition may occur when the torque converter clutch is engaged. The drone/vibration is magnified if hauling a full payload. The customer may state that the drone/vibration is more pronounced on acceleration or when pulling a load. If the customer is pulling a trailer or camper which has a significant wind drag, the noise may be constant (this is typically the worst case). The drone/vibration is caused by the propeller shaft transferring normal powertrain actions. 

Diagnosis:

The drone/vibration condition is engine speed specific and peaks at 1900 engine rpm on 4X2 models and 1850 engine rpm on 4x4 models. Noting the engine speed, accelerate the vehicle until the transmission reaches 4th gear and the torque converter clutch is engaged. If the drone/vibration is identified, perform the following Repair Procedure.

Repair:

This bulletin involves the replacement of the 2 piece propeller shaft with a revised propeller shaft that contains a yoke damper weight.

1.    Shift the transmission/transfer case to their Neutral positions. Raise and support vehicle (Figure 1).  

2.    Remove the U-joint clamp screws at rear axle pinion shaft yoke.

3.    Remove the bolts that attach the center bearing to the support bracket.    

4.    Slide the slip yoke off of the transmission/transfer case output shaft and remove the propeller shaft.

5.    Install the now propeller shaft (Part number determined from list given above).

6.    Slide the slip yoke on to the transmission output shaft.

7.    Install the center bearing to the support bracket.

8.    Install the bolts and tighten to 68Nm (50 ft.lbs).

NOTE: REPLACEMENT U-JOINT CLAMPS (PIN 4428723) AND SCREWS (PIN 6034965) MUST BE INSTALLED.

9.    Torque the u-joint clamp screws to 30Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

10.   Lower the vehicle, shift the transmission into park and return transfer case to 4x2 position.
