Airbag deactivation Instructions through 1998 Model Year

WARNING:       This instruction set accompanied TSB 08-32-97

IMPROPER TINKERING CAN CAUSE THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY UNEXPECTEDLY OR FAIL TO DEPLOY WHEN NEEDED!   BE SURE TO INSTALL THE PROPER WARNING TAGS IF AN AIRBAG IS DISABLED!   IT WOULD BE BEST TO HAVE THE DEALER PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE!!   IF YOU DECIDE TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE YOURSELF, YOU ALONE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY WHICH RESULTS FROM AN AIRBAG FAILURE!!!!

DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG -- ALL EXCEPT'95-'96 XJ

Using a DRB scan tool, follow the service manual procedure for Airbag System Diagnosis and Testing to resolve any active or stored faults prior to initiating deactivation sequence.

1.    Disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate.

2.    Wait two minutes for the energy reserve capacitor to discharge before proceeding.

3.    Locate and disconnect the yellow 2-way squib connector from the driver airbag. See Service Manual if necessary.

4.    . NS/GS/LH/LHS/PL/JA/JX/XJ/TJ SKIP TO STEP 7, all others continue with step 5.

5.    Install the driver airbag deactivation jumper to the control module side of the wire harness.

6.    Ensure that the jumper is fully seated by checking the locking tabs of the wire harness.

7.    Tie strap or tape back wiring harness to make sure that wiring does not buzz, squeak, rattle, or rub against any surface that may damage the wiring harness or jumper.

8.    Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition key to the run position, ensure airbag warning lamp goes out after approximately eight seconds. Note: NS/GS/LH/LHS/PL/JA/JX/XJ/TJ airbag warning lamp will REMAIN ON.

10.   Install double sided "DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on inside surface of driver door window within 2" of lower rear corner.

11.   Install the small yellow "DRIVER AIRSAG DEACTIVATED" label on lower half of driver side B-pillar.

12.   Install "WARNING: DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED..." label onto face of owners Manual. Note: Discard any unused extra labels supplied in package.

13.   Reactivate by reversing the above procedure.

14.   If vehicle is equipped with a passenger airbag that is to remain activated, verify system integrity by following the service manual procedure for Airbag System Diagnosis and Testing using a DRB scan tool.

DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG --'95-'96 XJ ONLY

1.    Disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate.

2.    Wait two minutes for the energy reserve capacitor to discharge before proceeding. Disarming:

3.    Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead driving position (road wheels straight).

4.    Remove the plastic cap on top of the steering wheel back cover using a small screwdriver.

5.    Unscrew the arming screw using an 8mm socket. The screw will retract until it is approximately one inch above the top surface of the back cover (after which the screw will just turn). Removing the arming screw from the steering wheel assembly.-

6.    Remove the driver airbag module from the steering wheel by removing the four attachment nuts located behind the steering wheel using a 10mm socket.

7.    Remove the steering wheel from the steering column (refer to service manual if necessary).

8.    Disassemble the steering wheel back cover from the steering wheel by removing the four attachment screws using a cross recess screwdriver.

9.    Remove the plastic nutblocker from the steering wheel by unsnapping it from the arming screw.

10.   Remove the arming screw from the steering wheel by backing it out from the nut.

11.   Reassemble the steering wheel back cover and attach steering wheel to steering column. Attach driver airbag to steering wheel and replace arming screw cap to steering wheel.

12.   Connect negative battery cable.

13.   Install double sided "DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on inside surface of driver door window within 2" of lower rear corner.

14.   Install the small yellow "DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on lower half of driver side B-pillar.

15.   Install "WARNING: DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED..." label onto face of owners manual. Note: Discard any unused extra labels supplied in package.

16.   Reactivate by reversing the above procedure.

PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG--ALL

Using a DRB scan tool, follow the service manual procedure for Airbag System Diagnosis and Testing to resolve any active or stored faults prior to initiating deactivation sequence.

Note: If vehicle is equipped with a Passenger Airbag Disable Switch, STOPI DO NOT perform the following deactivation sequence. Rather, use the switch to disable the passenger airbag.

1.    Disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate.

2.    Wait two minutes for the energy reserve capacitor to discharge before proceedings

3.    Locate and disconnect the yellow squib connector (2-way or 4-way as applicable) from the passenger airbag. See Service Manual if necessary.

4.    Install the passenger airbag deactivation jumper to the control module side of the wire harness.

5.    Ensure that the jur-nper is fully seated by checking the locking tabs of the wire harness.

6.    Tie strap or tape back wiring harness to make sure that wiring does not buzz, squeak, rattle, or rub against any surface that may damage the wiring harness or jumper.

7.    Connect negative battery cable.

8.    Turn ignition key to the run position, ensure airbag warning lamp goes out after approximately eight seconds. Note: NSIGSILH/LHS/PUJA/JX/XJITJ, if driver airbag is deactivated, airbag warning lamp will REMAIN ON.

9.    Install double sided "PASSENGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on inside surface of passenger door window within 2" of lower rear corner.

10.    Install the small yellow "PASSENGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on lower half of driver side B-pillar.

11.    Install "WARNING: PASSENGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED..." label onto face of owners manual. Note: Discard any unused extra labels supplied in package.

12.    Reactivate by reversing the above procedure,

13.    If vehicle is equipped with a driver airbag that is to remain activated, verify system integrity by following the service manual procedure for Airbag System Diagnosis and Testing using a DRS scan tool.

BOTH AIRBAGS -- ALL

Using a DRB scan tool, follow the service manual procedure for Airbag System Diagnosis and Testing to resolve any active or stored faults prior to initiating deactivation sequence.

Note: If vehicle is equipped with a Passenger Airbag Disable Switch, STOP! DO NOT perform the following deactivation sequence. Rather, refer to the driver side airbag deactivation instructions to disable the driver side airbag, and use the switch to disable the passenger side airbag. Install only the "DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" labels as described in the driver side airbag deactivation instructions.

1.    Disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate.

2.    Wait two minutes for the energy reserve capacitor to discharge before proceeding.

3.    AJ/AS/IES/SR/AN/ZJ/ZG continue with step 4, all others skip to step 15.

4.    Locate and disconnect the yellow 2-way squib connector from the driver airbag. See Service Manual if necessary.

5.    Install the driver airbag deactivation jumper to the control module side of the wire harness.

6.    Ensure that the jumper is fully Seated by checking the locking tabs of the wire harness.

7.    Tie strap or tape back wiring harness to make sure that wiring does not buzz, squeak, rattle, or rub against any surface that may damage the wiring harness or jumper.

8.    Locate and disconnect the yellow squib connector (2-way or 4-way as applicable) from the passenger airbag. See Service Manual if necessary.

9.    Install the passenger airbag deactivation jumper to the control module side of the wire harness.

10.   Ensure that the jumper is fully seated by checking the locking tabs of the wire harness.

11.   Tie strap or tape back wiring harness to make sure that wiring does not buzz, squeak, rattle, or rub against any surface that may damage the wiring harness or jumper.

12.   Connect negative battery cable.

13.   Turn ignition key to the run position, ensure airbag warning lamp goes out after approximately eight seconds.

14.   Skip to step 19.

15.    Locate and disconnect the wire harness from the ACM (Airbag Control Module). See Service Manual if necessary.

16.   Tie strap or tape back wiring harness to make sure that wiring does not buzz, squeak, rattle, or rub against any surface that may damage the wiring harness or jumper.

17.   Connect negative battery cable.

18.   Turn ignition key to the run position, note that airbag warning lamp will REMAIN ON.

19.   Install double sided "DRIVER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on inside surface of driver door window within 2" of lower rear corner.

20.   Install double sided "PASSENGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATED" label on inside surface of passenger door window within 2" of lower rear corner.

21.   Install the small yellow "BOTH AIRBAGS DEACTIVATED" label on lower half of driver side B-pillar.

22.   Install "WARNING: BOTH AIRBAG DEACTIVATED..." label onto face of owners manual. Note: Discard any unused extra labels supplied in package. Reactivate by reversing the above procedure.

23. Reactivate by reversing the above procedure.
