Date: Sep. 25, 1998

Models: 1994-1999 BR/BE Ram with 8.0L V10 engine

Symptoms:

Some vehicles may exhibit a condition where the accessory belt becomes damaged on the INBOARD edge.  Customers may explain the problem as belt noise.  This may be caused by the crank pulley loosening on the crank and causing a misalignment.

Diagnosis:

Inspect the accessory drive belt for fraying or unusual wear on the INBOARD edge.  If wear is noted, inspect the crank pulley bolt for looseness and the crank pulley for misalignment.  Sight the crank pulley with other accessory drives, or use a straightedge to detect misalignment.  If the crank pulley is misaligned or loose, perform the Repair Procedure.

Repair:

The repair procedure involves removing the crank pulley bolt, checking the press fit of the pulley, reinstalling the bolt using thread locker, and  pressing it onto the crankshaft, and replacing the drive belt.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Drain and remove the radiator.
    1. NOTE:  DRAIN COOLANT INTO A CLEAN PAN.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  5. Using your hands, pull on the crankshaft pulley to test the press fit.  The pulley should be too tight to be removed by hand pressure.
    1. NOTE:  IF THE CRANK PULLEY IS LOOSE (NO PRESS FIT), REPLACE THE CRANK PULLEY DAMPER WITH P/N 53020776.
  6. Use Miller Tool C-3688 and fully press the pulley onto the crankshaft.
  7. Add thread locker to the end 3 or 4 threads of the pulley bolt.
  8. Install the bolt and torque it to 230 ft-lbs (312 Nm).
    1. NOTE:  USE A BAR TO LOCK THE PULLEY INTO PLACE WHILE TIGHTENING.
  9. Install a new accessory drive belt.
  10. Reinstall the radiator.
  11. Reinstall the negative battery cable.
  12. Fill the system with the saved coolant and operate the vehicle to purge air from the system. Top off the ATF fluid if required.
