Discussion:
For the 2006 model year there will be two versions of the 42RLE transmission. The new variant
(variable line pressure - VLP) of the 42RLE transmission, has a new case, valve body and a
variable force style solenoid (pressure control solenoid). The solenoid is duty cycle controlled
by the TCM to vent the unnecessary line pressure supplied by the oil pump back to the sump.
The system also contains a line pressure sensor, the line pressure sensor is a direct input to
the TCM. The line pressure solenoid regulates the transmission line pressure and completes
the feedback loop to the TCM. The TCM determines desired line pressure based on current
gear and engine torque to satisfy road load conditions (similar to the 545RFE transmission).

2006 vehicles could be built with either variant. The new transmission can be identified by the
sales code of DGV or the new variable line pressure harness connector (Fig. 1).

NOTE: Always check the transmission sales code on the vehicles to determine which
transmission to order if a replacement transmission is necessary. DGV is the
sales code for the new variable line pressure 42RLE transmission and DG6 is
the sales code for the Non - VLP 42RLE transmission.
