Transmission Jumps Out Of Reverse

Models: 2005 - 2006 (DH/D1) Ram Truck Diesel

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with Cummins Turbo Diesel
engines, sales code ETH and G56 manual transmissions, sales code DEG.

Overview:
This bulletin involves replacing the reverse synchronizer.

Symptom/Condition:
A customer may experience the transmission jumping out of reverse.

Diagnosis:
If customers indicate that the condition is present, perform the Repair Procedure.

Parts Required:

Special Tools/Equipment Required:

938	Gear/Bearing Puller Bridge Adapter
9647	Gear/Bearing Puller

Repair Procedure:

1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery terminal.

2. Using the procedures outlined in the Service Information on TechCONNECT, remove
the transmission from the vehicle,

NOTE: Use care not to disturb the 5th gear synchro. It can easily come apart when
the reverse synchro is removed. The synchro springs, keys and balls are
easily lost.

3. Disassemble the transmission to the point where the mainshaft is removed from the
case.

4. On 4X4 vehicles, remove the snap ring that retains the main shaft bearing. This snap
ring is not present on 4X2 vehicles as the bearing is retained by the yoke.

5. Remove reverse gear synchronizer sleeve from reverse gear synchronizer hub.

6. Remove the mainshaft bearing and reverse synchro hub using bearing puller, 9647,
and adapter bridge, 938.

7. Install a new reverse synchronizer assembly, p/n 05142834AB.

8. Heat mainshaft bearing on bearing heater to a maximum of 177 Celsius (350°
Fahrenheit).

9. Install the mainshaft bearing and snap ring if equipped.

10. Assemble the remainder of the transmission.

11. Install the transmission in the vehicle

12. Connect the negative battery cables.
