Passenger Cab and Radiator Core Support Mounting Bolts
Models:
1998 (BR/BE) Ram built at the Lago Alberto assembly plant (M in the 11th VIN
position) From April 3, 1998 through June 11, 1998 (MDH 040300 through 061106)
1998 Dakota (AN) and Ram (BR) trucks built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant
("S" in the 11th VIN position) on March 25, 1998 (MDH 032509 through
032520
Problem:
The passenger cab and radiator core support mounting bolts on these
vehicles may have been improperly manufactured. As a result, bolt breakage
may occur during certain accident conditions which may cause increased
injury to vehicle occupants.
Repair:
The cab and core support mounting bolts must be replaced.

Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

Remove the passenger cab and radiator core support mounting bolts.

6 bolts on Dakota and Ram Standard cab (BR) models (Fig 1)

8 bolts on Ram extended cab (BE) models (Fig 2)

IMPORTANT: To prevent bolt breakage, loosen the bolts using a ratchet
or breaker bar. DO NOT use an impact wrench.

If a bolt is broken or breaks during removal, use the following procedure
to extract it:

Raise the cab slightly from the frame on the affected side using a tall,
adjustable jack stand. Locate the jack stand along the rocker panel pinch
weld. Use care not to damage the cab sheet metal.

Remove the upper isolator from the broken bolt location(s).

Center punch and drill a hole in the broken bolt and use a screw extractor
to remove the bolt from the body tapping plate.

Reinstall the upper isolator(s).

Lower the body back onto the frame.
-
Repeat for the other cab side if necessary.

Install the new passenger cab and radiator core support mounting bolts.
Torque to 60 ft-lb (80 Nm).
