Models:
1998 BR/BE 3500 series trucks with the 5.9L heavy duty gas engine, ( a 5 in the 8th VIN position) and a Federal emissions control system (sales code NAA)

Subject:
The PCM on about 2400 of the above vehicles will not illuminate the "maintenance required" light as specified by the Federal Regulations.

Repair:
The PCM needs to be reflashed with the MDS 1 or the MDS 2.

• If using the MDS 1 and DRBIII, the MDS must be at release 21 or higher and the TIL CD release must be 1179 or higher.
• If using the MDS 2 and DRBIII, the system must be operating at CIS CD2030 or higher.

The ECM software which is loaded during the recall procedure also includes any other ECM updates which may have been released (i.e. TSB's) between the date of manufacture and the issuance of the TIL CD update which was used.

NOTE: The Mopar Diagnostic System is required to perform the ECM flash. The system must be operating with release 21 or higher and TIL CD RELEASE 1169 or higher must be installed.

Type or print necessary info on the "Authorized Software Update" label (fig 1) and attach it to the ECM. Cover the label with clear tape. 
 
Type or print the following information on the Authorized Modification Label and attach the label near the VECI label (fig 2). 

Time allowances are:

• 0.2 hours for ECM update previously performed or not required
• 0.5 hours to reprogram the ECM
