Models: 1999 (BR/BE) Dodge Ram Trucks
NOTE: This recall applies only to certain vehicles equipped with a gasoline engines and a manual transmission built from February 2, 1999 through June 21, 1999 (MDH 0202XK through 0621XX).
Subject:
An incorrect underbody clutch line heat shield was installed on about 8,300 of the above trucks. The incorrect shield may not protect the plastic clutch line from @ exhaust system heat. This may cause the clutch line to melt under certain operating conditions and allow a hydraulic clutch fluid leak. Clutch fluid leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in an underbody fire.
Repair:
The underbody clutch line heat shield must be replaced.

Service Procedure:
1. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.
2. Locate the existing heat shield on the lower part of the dash panel near the transmission tunnel (Figure 1).
3. Remove the three (3) heat shield attaching nuts.
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with a V-10 engine, the heater hoses must be moved aside to access the heat shield nuts.
4. Remove the heat shield by sliding it inboard and down. Discard the heat shield.
5. Install the new heat shield. Tighten the three (3) nuts securely.
6. Lower the vehicle.

IMPORTANT: Some of the vehicles may be in dealer inventory. Federal law requires
completion of this recall on these vehicles before delivery. This also applies
to all applicable used vehicles in inventory, and vehicles brought in for service.
